October 19, 2009 Paula is taking a short course on cyanobacterial phylogeny in Argentina. October 17, 2009 Kohei, now at University of Tokyo, and Yonatan (Ben Gurion University) are visiting the lab for about a month. October 10, 2009 Elena and Xiaobo Tan from the College of Engineering received a grant from the NSF's Robust Intelligence Program on "AquaSWARM: Small Wireless Autonomous Robots for Monitoring of Aquatic Environments." The team will develop robotic fish to detect Harmful Algal Blooms. Watch a YouTube video where Xiaobo and Elena discuss the project. September 2, 2009 Paula's and Elena's manuscript on "Interactive Effects of N:P Ratios and Light on Nitrogen-Fixer Abundance" has been accepted for publication in Oikos. September 1, 2009 Elena and Chris received a grant from the NSF's Biological Oceanography Program on "Phytoplankton Traits, Functional Groups and Community Organization: A Synthesis." August 8, 2009 Our fabulous REU students from SUNY Geneseo, Cait Ryan and Dennis Ruppe, finished a very productive summer with us. They not only worked hard but played foosball even harder: see photo. July 20, 2009 Mridul, Elena and Chris participated in a summer school on "Interactions between ecological and evolutionary processes in aquatic systems" held at EAWAG, Switzerland. Elena lectured on phytoplankton ecology and evolution, Chris gave a tutorial on adaptive dynamics and Mridul listened to all the lectures. July 2, 2009 Kohei's paper on Phytoplankton Competition for Nutrients and Light in a Stratified Water Column is published in American Naturalist! June 12, 2009 Chris's NSF CAREER proposal has been recommended for funding. Congratulations! May 23, 2009 Mary Anne, Elena, Paula and Mridul presented their research at the IAGLR conference in Toledo, OH. May 22, 2009 Colin attended a course on adaptive dynamics taught by Stefan Geritz in Milan, Italy and will be traveling in Europe for the next three weeks. May 15, 2009 Congratulations to Chris who has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure! May 9, 2009 Tanguy Daufresne from INRA Toulouse, France is visiting the lab. May 4, 2009 Pedro Branco from Jef Huisman's lab at the University of Amsterdam will be visiting the lab for a month. May 1, 2009 Elena now officially received her NSF CAREER grant to look at the mechanisms of phytoplankton community reorganizations under global change. Congratulations! April 25, 2009 Congratulations to Jarad who received a Graduate School Dissertation Completion Fellowship! April 21, 2009 Colin will be staying with us and starting grad school at MSU this fall. Beth Miller will also be joining the lab as a graduate student in the fall. April 20, 2009 Chris gave a talk on trait-based approaches at a workshop in Potsdam, Germany on modeling hierarchical feedbacks in ecological forecasting. April 17, 2009 Congratulations to Mridul who received a Sigma Xi grant to support his research on experimental evolution in phytoplankton! April 17, 2009 Congratulations to Mary Anne who received a postdoc at University of Michigan to work on modeling hypoxia in lakes and estuaries! She will be leaving us in the end of June. April 10, 2009 Congratulations to Colin who was awarded an NSF predoctoral fellowship! March 25, 2009 Elena presented the lab's reseach on Harmful Algal Blooms at the 15th Annual Exhibition of the Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) on Capitol Hill. See Elena and Geoff Horst talking to Dr. Arden Bement, NSF Director. March 17, 2009 Elena's, Chris's and Kohei's recent paper in PNAS on diatom size evolution attracted quite a bit of publicity (EurekaAlert, ScienceDaily and others, including a major Japanese newspaper). March 13, 2009 First ice-free Gull Lake sampling happened almost a month earlier this year than in the last couple of years due to an earlier ice-out. Check out the rugged sampling crew (Paula, Mary Anne and Mridul). Last updated: October 19, 2009 |
