"[A lake] forms a little world within itself a microcosm within which all the elemental forces are at work and the play of life goes on in full, but on so small a scale as to bring it easily within the mental grasp."

Stephen A. Forbes (1887), The Lake as a Microcosm

Our research focuses on phytoplankton, the microscopic primary producers at the base of most aquatic food webs. Studying phytoplankton requires an integrated approach that links physiology to population and community processes and ecosystem dynamics. We use a combination of theoretical and empirical methods. The topics on the left give more details about our current and past research interests.
